PIne Island Fishing Report: Mixed Bag In Warming Water

Good news. There are a pile of fish moving around Pine Island Sound right now and the water temps are staying in the low to mid-60s. Big reds are schooling up in the very skinny flats near Pineland and sight fishing conditions couldn't be better. The water is so clear out there right now it reminds me of bonefishing in the Lower Keys. There are plenty of over-slot trout hanging in the pot holes and prop scars as well as sheepshead by the dozens. My buddy Ed Maximovich scored the fish in the photos above, as well as some nice trout all on white Gulp Jerk Shads.  The 4lb sheepshead was a real surprise since these guys rarely hit artificials.  Hit the oyster bars with a pile of live shrimp and you'll really score on them.

New Beavertail Micro Side Console Photos

I spent a chilly morning up in Palmetto yesterday running a pair of Beavertail's newest skiffs.  Both BT Micros were side console models, one stripped and one fully loaded. You can see these in person at the Naples Boat Show starting this Thursday.

The base model with 30 Etec.
Loaded BT Micro with almost every option.

Chilly Morning Redfish On Fly

It was far from the biggest red I've seen recently but Indiana angler John Krukemeier gets extra points for landing this 20 incher on fly this morning in some stiff wind and 50 degree temps. The water was still in the low-60's which is not cold enough to drive these fish off the flats.  Still plenty of them out there.

Winter White Pelicans In Pine Island Sound

The reds didn't want to eat our flies today but the weather was flawless and the birds cooperated with the camera.

Cool Video: Fly Fishing The 10K Islands

Two of my local buddies Brooks and Forrest hit the upper reaches of the Everglades with a Gheenoe, a couple of GoPros, and a handful of fly rods.  The results are rather excellent, especially given the appropriate Creedence Clearwater Revival soundtrack.

New Beavertail BT Micro Photos

Here's the latest Micro to leave the shop and they didn't skip any options on this one:

There weren't too many boxes on the option sheet that were left blank for this build.

You can also check out a quick video of this skiff running in foot and a half chop at Aeon/Beavertail's Facebook page, or by clicking here.

Pine Island Fishing Report: Good Start To A Warmer Week

We avoided the Polar Vortex that much of the south received last week but a good amount of clouds and wind caused a handful of canceled trips and kept me onshore for several days. This morning's weather was flawless and the water temps were even higher than I expected, in the mid to upper-60s through most of Matlacha Pass.   I was fishing with anglers Steve and Terry Michaud, who were wise enough to flee the tundra of Minnesota for the waters of SW Florida this month.  Steve kicked things off by landing this perfect 26" redfish near Pine Island Creek just after low tide.  Unfortunately, things slowed right down after that and despite spooking a handful of big reds, we didn't boat any others this morning.

The redfish bite has been really slow for me all month and I'm hearing the same story from most of the anglers I talk to at the boat ramp.  We've got perfect tides for them but the mullet schools that they love to follow have gotten a bit scarce in the Pass.  I plan on hitting the flats of Pine Island Sound over the next three days and I'm counting one the brighter water out there to produce a few more big reds.  It usually does this time of year.

One final note.  If you're just looking to bend a rod there are plenty of short trout in the north part of Matlacha Pass as well as big ladyfish, too.  The dolphins are also out in force so use barbless hooks if you want what you release to stand a chance.

No Snow On Pine Island

Sorry to do this to you Chicago.

Actually, none of these shots are from this week.  It's been cold here, too.  Today's high is only in the upper 60's but we're supposed to be back in the 80's on Friday.

I grew up in a cold place so I feel your pain up there.

Another Masterpiece From Spooled Reels Films

My friend Chris Helt at Spooled Reels has really topped himself this time with an astounding piece of cinematic achievement that makes "Citizen Kane" look like a worthless chunk of subway graffiti.  Watch and be amazed:

Okay, so I admit I'm a little biased about this one. Chris actually put that together in his spare time after a couple days filming with me on Matlacha last fall.  It was a really nice and unexpected gesture and I couldn't be happier with it.  This was just the start of a bigger project that will hopefully be completed at the end of this summer.  Keep an eye on Spooled Reels over the next few months for details.

First Fish Of 2014

My buddy Tim Gleason brought the first fish of the year on to my deck this morning with this nice 15" trout.  It was quickly followed by several others including a couple over-slot guys like the 21" beauty shown below.  Windy as hell out there but the year is off to a good start.
