Matlacha Fishing Report: Red Tide Gone, Redfish Return

Great news everyone, the red tide that put the skunk on Pine Island Sound all last week still has not made its way into Matlacha Pass.  There were plenty of mullet jumping all over the Indian Field flats this morning and baitfish galore even further north.  I suspect that the nasty cold front that nailed us late last week pushed all of that toxic algae out of the Sound and life has already returned to normal out there.

I was off the water for the last few days thanks to the Florida Sportsman boat show but we hit it this morning right at the incoming tide.  The redfish were everywhere, on the super skinny flats and in the deeper potholes.  Getting them to eat was another story.  We threw everything at them and got no takes until just before lunch when Maryland angler Jay Manchester drilled this 24 incher right on the nose with a Gulp Shrimp.  I definitely didn't rewrite the record book today but I'll take what we were given.  The weather and tides can't be better for the rest of the week and February is always on of my favorite months.  I'll be out there a lot.
